In a known method, the profiling is produced by longitudinal rolling and stepwise rotation of the hollow body. This method is technically complex and leads to relatively large dimensional inaccuracies in the profiling. In addition, it is not possible to profile completely cylindrical bodies. The new method is intended to provide dimensionally accurate profiles, to be rapid, to allow the profiling even of cylindrical bodies and to enable both regular and irregular profilings to be produced. The intention is, furthermore, to provide an apparatus for carrying out the method. The new method is characterised in that the preformed body (6) is set up on a chuck (27) arranged on the work spindle (2) of a spinning machine (1) and that the preliminary profiling and the final profiling are performed by at least one profiling roller (4, 4', 4''), which is likewise driven, in a certain speed ratio with respect to the work spindle (2), this profiling roller being rotatable about an axis (46) which is pivotable relative to the spindle axis (26) but is preferably parallel to it.
