PURPOSE:To attain high speed discharge of a signal electric charge by adopting the CCD of overflow drain structure for a horizontal CCD register whose charge is transferred from the vertical CCD register extracting electric charge from a photoelectric conversion element. CONSTITUTION:A horizontal CCD register having overflow drain structure is used for the horizontal shift register 6. A leadout pulse 7 is inputted at a time t1 during the vertical blanking period at pickup to transfer the signal charge stored so far in the photosensor 4 to the vertical shift register 5. Simultaneously, a reset voltage is applied to a reset electrode 15 of the horizontal CCD register 6. Then the vertical transfer clock 1 is generated at a frequency higher than that of normal operation and inputted to transfer the signal charge of the register 5 to the register 6 at a high speed. The electric charge to be transferred passes through the overflow control gate and discharged quickly to the overflow drain.
