A mechanical memory device for a seat arrangement in a vehicle which does not adversely affect the locking of the seat contains a memory stop (17) on a locking shaft (12) which is fixed to the seat and provided with teeth (10) for positive engagement in teeth (30) on a guide rail (6) fixed to the vehicle, the said memory stop (17) interacting with a counter-stop (19) on the support rail (6) and bearing teeth (20) which in the normal position of the stop (17) engage in a positive fashion between the teeth (10) of the locking shaft (12). After pivoting in one direction, this positive engagement is cancelled so that the stop (17) is longitudinally adjustable in order to store the optimum seat position which has been found; when pivoting in the opposite direction, a rotationally fixed connection between stop (17) and locking shaft (12) is obtained so that the locking is then cancelled whilst maintaining the position of the stop (17) (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
