Known loop grippers for tufting machines abrade the needles cooperating with them, so that these acquire sharp edges which cut into the substrate of the tufting fabric and damage this, whilst, on the other hand, the loops picked up by the loop gripper are not cut open reliably and cleanly. The new loop gripper is to eliminate these disadvantages in a simple way. In the loop gripper, the hook, which cooperates on the one hand with a needle and on the other hand with a shearing knife, is provided with undercuts in the region of the tip and of the cutting edge. As a result, the needle comes into contact with the hook only over a very short length and therefore experiences scarcely any abrasion, so that the feared sharp edges no longer occur. On the other hand, a clean cut of the loops picked up by the hook is guaranteed, because the knife can cooperate under prestress with the cutting edge in a simple way.
