NEW MATERIAL:2,5-Di(alpha-hydroxy)ethylthiophene shown by formula I. USE:A raw material for producing 2,5-divinylthiophene shown by formula II, a raw material for producing functional high polymers such as heat-resistant high polymer and electrically conductive high polymer. PREPARATION:2,5-Diacetylthiophene shown by formula III is reduced with a reducing agent such as lithium aluminum hydride in a solvent such as tetrahydrofuran or hydrogenated and reduced in the presence of a catalyst such as Pd/C to give a compound shown by formula I in high yield. This compound, without isolation, is halogenated with thionyl chloride in a solvent such as chloroform to give a 2,5-di(alpha-halo)ethylthiophene shown by formula IV (X is halogen) and then dehydrohalogenated with a dehydrohalogenating agent such as triethylamine to give 2,5-divinylthiophene shown by formula II.
