With a machine having a tensioning device for a wrap-round drive, particularly a belt drive for internal combustion engines, a tensioning element and a damping device are integrated into a piston-cylinder unit which forms a single component. The cylinder-piston unit is pivoted, at one end, on a lever which carries a tensioning pulley and, at the other end, on a tension lever, the angle of which can be adjusted by means of an applied tool, the tension lever being pivotable into an end position determined by a stop on the machine in order to give a defined belt pretension and being fixable in the said end position against the stop.
