PURPOSE:To improve the rapidity of fingerprint collating work by determining whether retrying is to be executed or a person having a collated fingerprint is not an objective person is to be decided in accordance with a coincidence ratio of collation when the coincidence ratio in the collation of fingerprint data is less than a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:The fingerprint data of an objective person previously registered and recorded in a storage device 16 are compared with fingerprint data read out by a fingerprint reading part 12 by a CPU 14, and when the collation coincidence ratio (coincidence in a feature point of fingerprint data) of the read fingerprint data is more than a prescribed value for deciding the objective person himself which is stored in a memory 15, the person with the fingerprint is decided as the objective person himself. When the coincidence ratio is less than the prescribed value, said collation coincidence ratio is compared with a retrying reference value stored in the memory 15, and when the ratio is more than the reference value, retrying is permitted. When the ratio is less than the reference value, the retrying is not permitted. When the collation coincidence ratio of the retried result is less than said prescribed value, the retrying is not permitted and the person having the fingerprint is not the objective person himself is decided.
