TOOL ACTUATORS FOR MACHINE TOOLS

A tool actuator for machine tools for machining workpieces at high speed to complex non-circular profiles comprises a rod-like tool holder mounted in two diaphragms for reciprocating rectilinear movement. A tool holder drive, such as a linear motor or a solenoid is provided for converting electrical tool positioning signals into corresponding tool holder movements with the diaphragms providing a biassing force tending to return the tool holder to a datum position.
