PURPOSE:To improve the traveling property of generated carriers by alternately laminating thin films of two kinds of amorphous Si contg. a prescribed element in at least one of the two kinds to form an electric charge retaining layer and by continuously varying the concn. of the element. CONSTITUTION:A photoconductive layer 3 consisting of an electric charge retaining layer 5 and an electric charge generating layer 6 is formed on an electrically conductive support 1 preferably with a barrier layer 2 in-between. The layer 5 is formed by alternately laminating thin films of two kinds of amorphous Si contg. one or more element among C, O and N in at least one of the two kinds and the concns. of the elements are continuously varied in the vicinity of the interface between the thin films. The layer 6 is formed by alternately laminating thin amorphous Si films and thin microcrystalline Si films. An element selected from group III or V of the periodic table is preferably incorporated into the layer 3 and one or more among C, O and N are preferably incorporated into the layer 6.
