PURPOSE:To easily segment a two-dimensional image by executing specific labeling processing three times or more while successively changing its scanning direction. CONSTITUTION:While scanning a binarized two-dimensional image in a fixed direction, the labeling processing of picture elements including the image is executed three times or more every completion of the scanning of the two-dimen sional image while successively changing the scanning direction. The labeling processing is executed by labeling an aimed picture element in accordance with the label of a picture element already labeled in picture elements directly connected to the aimed picture element or newly labeling the aimed picture element when there is no labeled picture element. Consequently, the same label is applied to respective picture elements in the batch of picture elements corre sponding to the image of an existing substance or the like.
