PURPOSE:To detect torque without making a device complex nor requiring high fitting accuracy by straining a piezoelectric element pinched between an input shaft and an output shaft with shear-directional force generated by variation in the torque of the input shaft. CONSTITUTION:A rotary shaft 1 is divided so that the input shaft 2 and output shaft 3 are sectioned in a crank shape. The axially opposite surfaces of division parts 2a and 3a are used as installation surfaces 4 and 5 for a piezoelectric element 10, which is pinched between them with a clamping bolt 10. Then when the input shaft 2 is driven to rotate or when the input shaft 2 in rotation is given variation in torque, shearing force operates on the piezoelectric element 10 between the installation surfaces 4 and 5 of the input shaft 2 and output shaft 3 to generate a torsional force. Consequently, the output voltage signal of the piezoelectric element 10 is inputted to a detecting circuit 16 by a contactor 18 through a slip ring 13, amplified by a charge amplifier, and waveform-processed by an integration circuit, whose output is led out as torque.
