PURPOSE:To search and locate an accident point on the ground easily, rapidly and accurately, by discriminating the direction of an accident point of a high voltage overhead distribution line from the polarity of the first wave of the output voltage of an antenna and searching the accident point from the reversal of the polarity. CONSTITUTION:A high voltage positive pulse is applied to an overhead distribution line 1 in a power failure state by a charge apparatus 2 to charge the same and earth discharge is performed by an accident equipment. Whereupon, a current advance wave propagates on the line 1 toward a charge point A and an anti-charge point C from an accident point B. An electromagnetic wave is generated when said advance wave passes a searching point D and received by a loop antenna 4 to output the induced voltage corresponding to the change portion of the magnetic field thereof. Since the antenna 4 is arranged so that the first wave of output voltage becomes negative polarity when the point D is present on the side of the point A from the point B and becomes positive polarity when the point D is present on the side of the point C, if the direction of the accident point is detected while moving along the line 1 from the point A, the polarity of the first wave of the output voltage of the antenna 4 is reversed at the time of the passage of the point B and, therefore, the accident point can be searched and located.
