Metallic wire, which comprises a highly alloyed, metallic material comprising high contents of alloying substances intended to produce special material properties in the said metallic material, such as a high degree of corrosion resistance, a high degree of resistance to oxidation at high temperatures or a high degree of hardness and a high degree of resistance to abrasion, where the said highly alloyed material is applied, as an essentially concentric layer, by casting a metal smelt on a thread-like core, which layer is of such a thickness that the cross section of the layer constitutes a substantial part of the total cross section. The wire is distinguished especially by the fact that the composition of the highly alloyed material constituting the said layer is principally selected with regard to the material properties relating to the use of the material and, in this connection, without regard to the workability properties, in particular the heat workability properties, with the alloying substance content of the material in the said layer being selected to be substantially higher than would otherwise be the case, and by the fact that at least one concentric layer is constituted in accordance with one of the alternatives a) - e), as follows: a) The layer consists of stainless steel containing, in % by weight, 20-40% Cr, up to 30% Ni, 2-8% Mo, up to 0.4% N, and C and other alloying substances essentially in normally occurring contents, with the remainder being Fe and normally occurring impurities. b) The layer consists of stainless, precipitation- hardening steel containing, in % by weight, 0.03-0.15% C, up to 0.8% Mn, up to 0.8% Si, 15-18% Cr, 4-9% Ni, up to 2% Al, up to 3% Mo, up to 0.4% N, and other alloying substances essentially in normally occurring contents, with the remainder being Fe and normally occurring impurities. c) The layer consists of a material which is resistant to high-temperature oxidation and which contains, in % by weight, up to 1.2% C, up to 60% Cr, up to 50% Ni, up to 4% Si, up to 7% Al, up to 2% Ti, up to 8% Co, up to 2% rare earth metals, and other alloying substances essentially in normally occurring contents, with the remainder being Fe and normally occurring impurities. d) The layer consists of steel, such as stainless steel or carbon steel, which exhibits very good cuttability and which contains, in % by weight, 0.8-1.2% S or up to 0.8% Pb, with, where appropriate, the Mn content preferably having been lowered to a certain degree as a compensation for high S contents. e) The layer consists of high speed steel containing, in % by weight, 0.7-2% C, up to 6% Cr, up to 10% Mo, up to 16% W, up to 3% V, up to 15% Co, and other alloying substances in normally occurring contents, with the remainder being iron and normally occurring impurities. |
