Compositions, and processes for using the compositions when producing iron metal components for subsequent surface electroplating by means of preparing a solution which contains an acid and a sequestering agent, immersing the components and abrading agent in the solution, and stirring the components and the abrading agent while keeping the components and the agent immersed in the solution. The compositions consist of dry, granular compositions. Specific formulations are presented in detail. In general, each composition contains, in defined percentages by weight, oxalic acid; a phosphorus-sequestering agent, with the ratio by weight of oxalic acid to sequestering agent being in the range from approx. 1.2:1 to approx. 0.4:1, an ammonifying agent in a quantity which is sufficiently effective to bring the pH of the solution which is formed when the composition is dissolved in water to approx. 3.5; a surface-active agent in a quantity which is sufficiently effective to accomplish wetting of the composition; and a quantity of carrier material, which may consist of a granular absorbent, and which is sufficient to make up the remainder of the composition.
