A continuous-time information processing system having an input layer (20 a'', 20 d'') which receives an input stimulus vector (51, 52), a hidden layer (20 b'', 20 e'') which processes the input stimuli vector and passes the information to an output layer (20 c'', 20 f'') which provides an output vector (55, 56) and receives an error stimulus vector (53, 54). Each layer consists of one or more processing elements. Two processing elements may be coupled together by a synaptic element (10 a''-10 z''). Each synaptic element has a unique transfer function. Each synaptic element provides a forwards transfer of information and a backwards transfer of error between processing elements. The output value of each processing element is dependent upon a function of the information transferred to the processing element by the synaptic elements transferring information to it. The error value of each hidden processing element is similarly dependent upon a different function of the error transferred to the hidden processing element by the synaptic elements (19 a''-10 z'') transferring error thereto. The system further includes a means for adjusting the transfer characteristics of each synaptic elements. |
