The invention concerns a method for taking pots 1 from the top end of a stack 2 of pots 1 by means of a holder member 5 which comprises a spindle 6 with a collar 7 at the bottom end in the position of use of the holder member 5. The collar 7 is made of a compressible material which, when pressed into the open end of a pot 1, can be pressed together by the inner conical wall of the pot 1 in such a way that the pot 1 sticks to the collar 7 and can thus be lifted from the stack 2, after which a scraper plate 8 is used to release the grip between the collar 7 and the pot 1 when the pot 1 has been introduced into a recess 3 in a plant box 4. The invention also concerns an apparatus in the form of a holder member 5 for use in carrying out this method, and in a further embodiment the apparatus comprises a plurality of the said holder members, a scraper plate 13, a release plate 14 which can be driven in parallel so as to secure the said holder members, and actuation members, such as a release handle 15 and carrier handle 16 which permits simultaneous actuation of the holder members so that several pots 1 at a time can be transferred to the recesses in a plant box 4. <IMAGE>
