PURPOSE:To increase the storage capacity of a disk substantially when defect due to manufacturing generated in the disk, by performing format control so that a defective can be set at a gap position between sectors based on defect information. CONSTITUTION:A host system sends the defect information at every track from an error map which indicates the defective position of the disk generated on a manufacturing process to a HDC11. The detects the defective position on the track of the disk to be formatted, and also, generates and internal index IX2. An HDD10 sends an external index IX1 of one pulse to the HDC11 at every revolution of the disk. The HDC11 controls the start of formatting synchronizing with an internal index IX2 from a timer 22. In such a case, the generating timing of the internal index IX2 is set so that the defective position at the time of formatting can be set at the gap position between the sectors by the generation circuit 20 of the HDC11.
