PURPOSE:To obtain 2,6-isomer, by isopropylating naphthalene with propylene, distilling to give a diisopropylnaphthalene fraction and bringing the fraction into contact with a zeolite adsorbent showing selective adsorptivity to 2,6-isomer. CONSTITUTION:Naphthalene is isopropylated with propylene and separated by distillation into a low-boiling fraction consisting of naphthalene and monisopropylnaphthalene, a diisopropylnaphthalene fraction and a polyisopro pylnaphthalene fraction. The low- and the high-boiling fractions are returned to the initial process and the diisopropylnaphthalene fraction is brought into contact with a first zeolite adsorbent (X type and Y type zeolite replaced with K ion) showing selectivity for to 2,6-isomer or 2,6-isomer and 2,7-isomer and the desorbed substance is brought into contact with a second zeolite adsorbent showing selective adsorptivity to continuously give the aimed substance in high purity. The adsorption and separation is preferably carried out in a pseudo moving bed.
