The invention relates to a method making it possible to deposit adhesive labels onto packages and to the device for implementing it. The method consists in holding, at a standstill, opposite the article, the label which has been partially detached from its carrier strip, a buffer pad ensuring partial adhesion thereof; the detaching of the part still on the strip is effected in synchronisation with the movement for transferring the article; finishing is ensured at the following station by means of smoothing. The machine is composed of a transfer mechanism, of a device for advancing the strips, of a pad ensuring placing and of a smoothing station. The strips are drawn over the plate 21 by a roller 15 assisted by pressers 19, during the rotation of the turret 20. The cushion 31 effects placing at the station 22 and the rollers 38 effect smoothing at the station 23. <IMAGE>
