PURPOSE:To increase a saturation magnetic flux density and to permit high- density magnetic recording by forming a thin ferromagnetic film of an assemblage of columnar particles and coating the surface of the columnar particles with iron nitride or iron nitroxide essentially consisting of epsilon-Fe2-3N. CONSTITUTION:A material 8 for vapor deposition is melted and evaporated by ion guns 3, 5 of a device for forming a magnetic recording medium and is deposited by evaporation on a substrate 2 made by using a polyethylene terephthalate film. Gaseous N2 is introduced from the ion gun 5 to the substrate and gaseous Ar from the ion gun 3 thereto. The assemblage of the columnar particles 4 is formed on the nonmagnetic substrate 1 and the surface 2 thereof is mainly constituted of epsilon-Fe2-3N. The inside 3 thereof is formed of the assemblage or assembly of epsilon-Fe, Fe2O3, Fe4N, etc. The saturation magnetic flux density of the magnetic recording medium is increased and the high-density magnetic recording is permitted.
