PURPOSE:To simplify the speed control of a linear motor drive type slide fork device in an automatic warehouse, by dividing the primary side of a linear motor into parts which are arranged respectively in parts where a movable fork overlaps with a stationary fork when both ends of the movable fork is projected, and selectively controlling the energization of the parts of the primary side. CONSTITUTION:The primary side 40 of a linear motor is divided into two parts 40a, 40b in the sliding direction of a middle stage fork 20, which are then arranged in parts where the middle stage fork 20 overlaps with a stationary fork 10 when both ends of a final stage fork 30 are projected to the longest distant position. At this time the length of the parts 40a, 40b of the primary side 40 is set to be equal to the overlapping margin of the armature of the middle stage fork 20. Further, the parts 40a, 40b of the primary side 40 are selectively energized. With this arrangement, the primary side which is energized in accordance with the sliding direction of a slide fork is determined, and then the middle stage fork is driven while the speed of the linear motor is controlled. Thereby it is possible to simplify the speed control.
