The stack-changing device (1), shown in simplified form in the plan view, has a pallet lifter (2) which is constructed as a frame and whose lifting claws (3) and centring cone (4) lift the work-piece pallets from a pallet stack a or b, move them to the side and set them down on the other pallet stack so that work-pieces to be processed can be removed from or returned to the required stack. The stack-changing device (1) moves for the transfer, for example, into the position shown in Figure 1, in which the pallet lifter (2) is lowered with one of its longitudinal members between the pallet stacks a and b. It then moves to the side so that the lifting claws (3) can pass below the projections (17) of the longitudinal members (16) projecting beyond the crossmembers (15). <IMAGE>
