1,063,803. Crash barriers. E. BUCHER. Feb. 27, 1964 [Feb. 28, 1963; March 27, 1963; June 18, 1963; Jan. 25, 1964], No. 8126/64. Heading E1G. A vehicle crash-barrier has slow-recoil shock-absorbing means between a rigid barrier and a rigid barrier support. A concrete support 7 carries a guard rail 1 secured to the support through a spring 6 and a bridging-plate 4 such that as the rail 1 moves under impact the resistance to movement increases. In a second embodiment, a guard rail is secured to a ground support through a soft metal cylinder containing two other soft cylinders. The rail may be elastically deformable and the cylinders plastically deformable. The three cylinders may be each secured between the rail and the support. Variable rate plastic yield may be provided by multicellular brick held between rails and a post. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 the tubular guard rail 24 is connected to the ends of a spring 33 which extends freely under impact and where return is fluid damped by a piston 38 having flop valves 35a. A wheel deflecting ramp 39 may be anchored to the post 32. |
