[Also in Division G5] In apparatus for generating sonic or ultrasonic vibrations in a flowing fluid, the fluid flows in either direction through an orifice 76 and along a vibratory element (as shown, a blade 79 fixed at end 80) which is rapidly reciprocated towards and away from the orifice. The orifice may comprise interleaving plates having arcuate edges whereby the size of the orifice is adjustable by varying the engagement of the plates (see Figs. 2, 3, not shown). The plates vibrate and contribute to the acoustic vibrations of the fluid. The vibratory element may be bell-shaped (see Fig. 4 not shown); or conical and cooperating with a conical orifice, and the cone and orifice may have threads of opposite hand (see Figs. 5 and 6 not shown). Applications are homogenization and emulsification of liquids, making suspensions, and defibering of cellulosic material.
