A valve device (8,9,10) of a liquid applicator is located between a liquid tank (7) and a writing or coating member (13). A threaded piston plate (19) from which a piston rod (18) extends backwards, is mounted in a water-tight manner in the liquid tank so as to be non-rotatable about the axis of the piston rod but slidable in the axial direction. A cam body (26) screwed rotatably onto the threads of said piston rod is provided with a cam groove (25) with ridges or valleys regularly spaced circumferentiaily. A cam follower (31) at the end of a push member (32) lies in engagement with said cam groove. The push member is non-rotatable about the axis of the cylinder but movable in the axial direction, and when pushed or depressed causes the piston rod to move forwards thereby driving liquid through the valve into the writing or coating member. <IMAGE>
