PURPOSE:To improve yield, by executing the work process to determine a cutting datum in case more than two values of camparison between an array pitch value and a reference value are continuously within the allowable tolerance. CONSTITUTION:A device to machine a commutator 1 where commutator segments 2 and micas 3 are alternately arranged is composed of a laser sensor 4, a cutter 5 for grooving, a motor 6 to rotate the commutator 1 at designated angles, a rotary encoder 7 and a control device 8. In this grooving, the commutator 1 is rotated at an angle corresponding to five commutator segments and at the same time an output pulse signal of the rotary encoder 7 having relevance to the signal from the 1a laser sensor 4 is inputted. Then, the central positions of each mica 3 are worked out and the array pitches are found, which are then compared with the reference value one by one. Suppose the values of the array pitch for consecutive three are within the allowable tolerance, it is judged that it is not dislocated from the real boundary and is designated as the cutting datum.
