Two-stage gearbox

A two-stage gearbox for vehicles, especially passenger motor vehicles, is described which has a gear pair (3, 4; 5, 6; 7, 8; 8, 10), assigned to each transmission gear and constantly meshing with one another, each of which gear pairs respectively comprises a fixed gear (3, 6, 8, 9) rotationally fixed to a transmission shaft and a loose gear (4, 5, 7, 10) held so that it can rotate on another transmission shaft. In addition, the gearbox has means of coupling (14, 15; 20, 21; 26, 27; 31, 32) for connecting each of the loose gears to a component rotationally fixed on the other transmission shaft. In order to achieve the shortest possible overall axial length of the two-stage gearbox, it is proposed that in addition to a loose gear of the one transmission gear, a fixed gear of another transmission gear be arranged on each transmission shaft (1, 2) and that the means of coupling be designed for connection of the loose gear to the adjacent fixed gear. At the same time, the means of coupling assigned to each respectively adjacent gear pair may be arranged on the two transmission shafts in essentially the same radial plane. <IMAGE>
