A carton (10) contains a flap (68) on the outer top panel (60) and a flap (70) on the inner top panel (64), the free edge (80) of the outer top panel flap (68) overlying the inner top flap (70). When a user presses down on the outer top panel flap (68), it pivots out of the way to allow the user's fingers to fold the inner top panel flap (70) under the top panel structure to provide a handle for lifting the carton (10). When the fingers are withdrawn, the outer top panel flap (68) is biased upwardly by its arcuate foldable connection to close the handle opening. If the inner top panel flap (70) is contacted by the outer top panel flap (68) as it pivots upwardly, the outer top panel flap (70) pushes the inner top panel flap (70) up to a substantially closed position. Score lines (72, 76) extending from the ends of the foldable connections of the inner and outer top panel flaps (68, 70) to the corners of the carton (10) distribute the lifting stresses to side panels (14, 22) of the carton (10). |
