There is described a process and an apparatus in which the catalytic conversion of H2S and SO2 present in a gas stream into elemental sulphur is carried out in a plant having at least two reactors in which one or more catalyst beds are installed, at least one catalyst bed being operated below the dew point of sulphur and at least one further bed being regenerated, the reactors being cycled between regeneration and adsorption, with the respective reactor taking the place of the other, the sulphur vapour formed being condensed out by cooling and the gas stream freed of sulphur compounds being drawn off. To regenerate, during normal operation, the catalyst beds deactivated by elemental sulphur after a certain time, with the least complicated apparatus possible, at least two reactors always operate in series in the flow direction, and the flow direction of the gas stream is reversed by means of multi-directional valves. This process has the advantage that it requires substantially fewer pipes, is more readily controlled and is less susceptible to faults. <IMAGE>
