PURPOSE:To recognize an input pattern with high accuracy by calculating the ratio of a distance between corresponding points with the input pattern and a standard pattern and a distance from the prescribed pattern reference point of respective points of the standard pattern at every feature point. CONSTITUTION:When the feature point of the stroke of a pattern to constitute a character and a graphic, for example, the coordinates of the feature point composed of the starting point and ending point of respective strokes and the point to divide equally the above-mentioned stroke are compared between an input pattern and a standard pattern and the above-mentioned input pattern is recognized, a distance (d) between corresponding points of the above- mentioned input pattern and the standard pattern is obtained, and a distance (r) from respective points of the standard pattern, for example, the pattern reference point given as the gravity center position of the standard pattern is obtained respectively. A ratio T of above-mentioned distances (d) and (r) is respectively obtained concerning respective points, an obtained comparison T is mutually compared to respective these points, and when the ratio T of all points is equal in a prescribed error scope, it is decided that the above- mentioned input pattern and standard pattern are equal.
