PURPOSE:To extend the life of a photosensitive body by controlling a holding member or separating pawl in such a manner that the contact time for pressing the tip part of the separating pawl to the photosensitive body is short at the time of vertical passage of paper and is long at the time of horizontal passage of the paper in accordance with the control signal from a control part at the time of separating the paper tightly sticking to the surface of the photosensitive body. CONSTITUTION:A sensor part 4 detects whether the paper 7 tightly sticking to the surface of the photosensitive body 10 is in a vertical passing state or horizontal passing state at the time of copying. The working time of a member 6 for moving the separating pawl is controlled by the control part 5 which makes computation in accordance with the input signal from the sensor part 4 and generates the control signal. The member is thus so controlled by the control part 5 that the time for pressing the separating pawl 2 to the body 10 is short at the time of the vertical passage of the paper and is long at the time of the horizontal passage. Since the pressing of the pawl 2 to the body 10 for the unnecessarily long time is averted, the damage of the body 10 by the pawl 2 is decreased.
