Below the basket (28) is a catching apparatus which tapers towards the bottom in the manner of a funnel and which is adjoined by a vertical pipe (34) with a transition elbow (40) and a long running channel (36) which is inclined obliquely downwards. The running channel (36) is sufficiently long to extend into the region of the limits of the free-throw area, and the inclination is selected so that the running channel (36) ends at a distance above the erection surface of the return apparatus. The entire running channel can be pivoted through at least 180@ about the axis (32) of the outlet aperture of the catching apparatus. At the end of the running channel is a stop (44), against which the returned ball comes to rest. The player can retrieve the ball blind at a precisely predetermined and selectable position, without having to bend. <IMAGE>
