PURPOSE:To permit density adjustment in plural stages without increasing fogging and reversal fogging by increasing and decreasing the number of light beams which successively scan the prescribed position on the same scanning lines in the main scanning direction of an image carrier in accordance with the signal from an optical modulation control means. CONSTITUTION:The optical modulation control means 8 which make optical modulation of the light beams b1-b3 respectively independently is provided. A prescribed number of the light beams b1-b3 in accordance with the signal from the control means 8 successively scan the prescribed position on the same scanning line in the main scanning direction on the image carrier 7, while the irradiation quantity of the light beams in the part to be irradiated on the image carrier 7 is adjusted to change the potential of the latent image formed on the image carrier 7, thereby adjusting the density of the formed image. The adjustment of the image density is thereby permitted without increasing the fogging and reversal fogging even if a semiconductor laser of a wide dynamic range is not used.
