PURPOSE:To attain satisfactory water stopping effect of a water stopping tape for optical fiber cable even for ionized water such as sea water, etc. by constituting a water absorbing swellable layer of the tape of crosslinked polyethylene oxide obtnd. by the crosslinking reaction of polyethylene oxide having >=20,000 average mol.wt. admixed with a specified amt. of a specified crosslinking agent. CONSTITUTION:In a water stopping tape 3 having at least one water absorbing and swellable layer 2 on at least one surface of a film shaped base material 1, the water absorbing swellable layer 2 is constituted of polyethylene oxide having >=20,000 average mol.wt. contg. 0.4-2.0wt.% bi- or trifunctional crosslinking agent. By this constitution, the water stopping tape has almost same water absorbing performance for both fresh water and ionized water such as sea water so there is no restriction concerning the environment for setting the optical fiber cable coated with the water stopping tape of this invention. |
