To extract deposits underground, a top gate road and a bottom gate road are driven on both sides of the deposit to be extracted, whereupon a preliminary bore of small diameter is sunk between these two gate roads, and a cutting mechanism is suspended by means of a carrying arrangement consisting, for example, of a rod, chain or rope haulage line arranged in the bore and with the top part in a holding and haulage device erected in the top gate road. The cutting mechanism has two opposed cutters and is gradually drawn up by means of the carrying arrangement, in the course of which the mineral broken off by the cutter teeth drops freely downwards onto a conventional conveyor located in the bottom gate road. <IMAGE>
