A process for the manufacture of 4-(phenylmethyl) aspartate from aspartic acid and benzyl alcohol is characterized in that a reaction mixture containing 10 to 40 mol of benzyl alcohol and 1 to 5 mol of acetyl chloride per mol of aspartic acid is used, that the reaction is carried out at a temperature between-10 DEG C and 50 DEG C, and that the product is precipitated, when reaction is complete, by neutralization with organic bases. |
