Water pump for the cooling circuit of a motor-vehicle engine, with a pump body in which a pump chamber is made in which there is situated an impeller which is arranged with an end region (4a) of its hub (4) lightly touching, with its front side, a sliding ring (8) which is a component of an annular seal (7) provided between the shaft (5) of the impeller (3) and the pump body (1). Situated between this end region (4a) of the hub (4) of the impeller (3) and the sliding ring (8) are wear-inhibiting means which are formed from a coating (9) which is composed of a very hard material and is applied to the surface of the said end region (4a) of the hub (4) by plasma disintegration. <IMAGE>
