A 16-bit microprocessor system having an IC for data bus control executes byte and word exchange operations with 8-bit and 16-bit input-output devices and memory modules. The IC 3 allows the devices and modules to be connected to a common 16-bit microprocessor system data bus 10,11 and protects the system main storage from layering in dependence on the memory modules' bit-width. This is achieved by means of identifying signals, controlled by the 16-bit microprocessor 2 and the devices and modules. The IC 3 distinguishes these signals and controls a system data switch 4 to couple the 16-bit bus 10,11 selectively to buses 13,14. <IMAGE>
