The invention relates to a component provided in the power transmission path of a vehicle, such as a clutch disc with a damping device which is provided within an assembly such as a friction clutch that has a hub and a lining carrier disc, these being rotatable relative to one another - starting from a neutral starting position - in at least one direction counter to at least two energy storage stages. In a first range of rotation, only one of the energy storage stages - the preliminary damper stage - is operative and only when the friction clutch is engaged and a certain torque above that of the first stage (the preliminary damper stage) is being transmitted is it ensured that the preliminary damper is not acting alone, while it is ensured that the preliminary damper can act on its own again when the friction clutch is disengaged.
