The invention relates to a chain wheel for bicycles, having varying distances of its periphery from the axle of the pedal cranks, which are offset by 180@ with respect to each other, and intends to provide a chain wheel by means of which the energy requirement during pedalling is reduced. According to the invention, it is proposed, for this purpose, to assemble the peripheral shape of the chain wheel from circular arcs of different radii, the pedal cranks being arranged, in the approximately horizontal position, in regions of lower radii, while the point of engagement of the running-on chain is, at the same time, situated in the region of the largest radius (Figures 1, 2). <IMAGE>
