PURPOSE:To efficiently electrolyze potassium chloride brine using a specified cation exchange membrance by providing a specified rate of elongation to the membrane and adjusting a potassium hydroxide soln. in a cathode chamber to a specified concn. CONSTITUTION:Potassium chloride brine is electrolyzed using a cation exchange fluorocarbon membrane contg. sulfonic acid groups as ion exchange groups and having 1,300-1,400 equiv. weight of the sulfonic acid groups at the cathode side surface and 1,000-1,200 at the anode side surface. The membrane is immersed in water or an aqueous hydrochloric acid soln. until the elongation due to water absorption and swelling reaches 3-9%, and immediately it is attached to an electrolytic cell. The concn. of an aqueous pottassium hydroxide soln. in the cathode chamber is adjusted to 20-28wt%. The total concn. of Ca and Mg in the fed aqueous potassium chloride soln. is maintained at <=0.05mg/l, and the concn. of KCl in the potassium chloride soln. in the anode chamber is kept at >=150g/l. |
