PURPOSE:To obtain the title forming roll appropriate for the production of sheet glass and having excellent resistance to heat and corrosion by forming a sheathing layer obtained by sintering the powder of a heat and corrosion resistance alloy on the outer periphery of a roll base body. CONSTITUTION:A metallic bottom cover 2 is previously welded to the lower end of a metal frame 1, the roll base body R is stored in the frame 1, alloy powder P is further packed in a gap G, and an upper cover 3 is welded to the upper end to hermetically seal the frame 1. The powder of a cobalt-based heat-resistant alloy having excellent resistance to heat and corrosion is appropriately used as the alloy powder P. An inert gas is introduced into a furnace 10 to prevent the oxidation of the metal, and the gas is then compressed to about 1,000atm to exert pressure on the outer periphery of the frame 1. The alloy powder P in the frame 1 is compressed by the pressure exerted in the direction as shown by the arrow, then heated at about 1,000 deg.C for about 60min, and sintered. Consequently, a sheathing layer is formed on the outer periphery of the base body of the roller R. The roller is slowly cooled to room temp., and taken out from the frame 1. The sheathing layer is turned to a specified outer diameter, buffed, and specularly finished.
