The production of heat and temperature resistant glass fibers having nonrefractory inorganic oxides in addition to silica results from forming the glass shapes and treating them with a phosphorus-containing compound. The glass shapes are formed from silicate systems having at least one nonrefractory inorganic oxide and optionally having other inorganic oxide glass formers than silica and treating the shapes with the phosphorus-containing compound to form a coating of the compound on the glass shape. The heat and temperature resistant glass shape has a softening point greater than the softening point of the untreated glass shape.
