PURPOSE:To shorten the required time of an initializing processing by executing initializing to assign a substitutive sector for a defective sector even though the ID parts of all sectors on a hard disk are read. CONSTITUTION:In a hard-type formatting, the ID parts and data parts are formed for all the sectors on the hard disk 1a. If a data part can not be formed, a defective sector address is written in a defective information area 1 on the hard disk 1a by an address information writing means 2. An initializing program 3 executes the initialization by assigning substitutive sectors for defective sectors based on the defective sector addresses corresponding to the number of entries of the defective information area 1. Consequently, the time time required for the initialization can be shortened.
