The middle portion 1a of a sleeve 1 having closed-ended slots 8 is expanded (by the axial displacement of an expander 4 having a roughened, frusto-conical portion 4a) to join together plates 3, 9. Before use, the expander 4 is retained, Fig. 2, between a projection or projections 7 in the sleeve and a surface complementary to the tapered portion 4a. A coned, grooved head 2 is first driven into the plate 3. The expander 4 is also grooved and is threaded internally to be drawn towards the head 2 by a screw 6. |
