PURPOSE:To enhance the electrophotographic characteristics of a photosensitive body by incorporating a specified diphenyldicyanoethylene derivative in a photosensitive layer. CONSTITUTION:The diphenyldicyanoethylene derivative to be added to the photosensitive layer is represented by the formula shown on the right in which each of R1 and R2 is H, alkyl, nitro, or the like; Mes is mesityl; and each of n and m is 0, 1, or 2, and m+n>=1. Said compound can be synthesized, for example, by condensing a corresponding benzophenone derivative with malonitrile in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst, when needed. When the photosensitive layer is of a single layer structure, it is added as a sensitizer or an electron transfer material, and when the photosensitive layer is of a laminate structure, it is dissolved in a coating solution composed essentially of a binder resin and a desired solvent, and applied to the surface of an electric charge generating layer to form a charge transfer layer.
