PURPOSE:To print a character at an arbitrary position even with respect to a paper of any size, by inputting a signal showing a character to a printing head from external machinery and allowing a printing head to perform printing operation in synchronous relation to the movement of a case to with respect the paper. CONSTITUTION:A printer is equipped with a holding case 1, a printing head 2, a ribbon cassette 4 supplying an ink ribbon 3 to the front surface of the printing head 2, a slide roller 5, a rotary encoder 6 and an interface 7. The rotary encoder 6 operates in conjunction with the slide roller 5 through a passive roller 6a to output the signal corresponding to the rotation of the slide roller 5, that is, the sliding movement of the case 1. The interface 7 inputs a signal showing a character from external machineries 9, 10 and outputs the driving signal corresponding to the signal showing the character to the printing head 2 in synchronous relation to the moving signal from the rotary encoder 6.
