PURPOSE:To produce the titled compounds useful as a raw material for perfumes, etc., in stabilized high selectivity and conversion rate, by reacting styrenes with an organic peroxide in the presence of an epoxidation catalyst and boron compound at temperatures in two stages. CONSTITUTION:Styrenes (e.g. styrene) are mixed with an organic peroxide (e.g. cumene hydroperoxide) in the coexistence of an epoxidation catalyst (e.g. metallic compound selected from Mo, V and Ti) and a boron compound (e.g. trimethyl borate), initially kept at a temperature of <=100 deg.C, preferably within the range of 20-90 deg.C for a given time to carry out reaction in the former stage. The reaction in the latter stage is then carried out at a temperature of >=100 deg.C, preferably 100-150 deg.C to afford the aimed styrene oxides (e.g. styrene oxide). The resultant compound is a raw material for high polymer stabilizers, ultraviolet ray absorbers, medicines, perfumes, solvent stabilizers, food additives, etc. |
