A process for treating manure and/or waste water sludge to form a granule paroduct. According to the invention, manure and/or waste water sludge is mixed with a quantity of calcium oxide such that the temperature of the mixture increases to, and for some time remains at, at least 70 DEG C. The mixture is reacted until substantial completion of the reaction of calcium oxide with water, and subsequently mixed with a natural or synthetic binder. The resulting product is granulated.
