NEW MATERIAL:The optically active ester compound of formula I (R is 1-18C n-alkyl; m is 2-12; n is 3-6; * represents asymmetric C) or formula II. EXAMPLE:4-(5'-Methyldecyl)benzoic acid 4-n-octoxyphenyl ester. USE:A liquid crystal material or a component of ferroelectric liquid crystal composition. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I or formula II can be easily produced by conventional esterification reaction, e.g. reaction of benzoic acid having optically active alkyl-substituent group at 4-site with a hydroquinone mono-n- alkyl ether or reaction of 4-n-alkylbenzoic acid with an optically active alkyl monoether of hydroquinone in the presence of a condensation dehydration agent comprising N,N-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and 4-pyrrolidinopyridine in an inert solvent such as dichloromethane.
